Let's Talk Mother's Day Gifts

In every wedding guestbook, I always write the same thing. "Dear [groom's name], When in doubt, buy her jewelry." People laugh when they see it, but I consider it a public service announcement. When it comes to the ladies in your life, there's no need to give gift-giving much thought. If it blings, it wins. Keep it simple.

Over the next week or so the internets are going to offer you lots of ideas for Mother's Day gifts: books, tote bags, pajamas, bedding, even appliances. The choices are plentiful, but ultimately unnecessary. Moms are women, and women like shiny things. It is one of the few absolutes in life. Jewelry always fits and there is both a sentimental and material value to it. You cannot go wrong.

Below are some suggestions that won't break the bank. And even if they do, what of it? This woman gave you life.

Diamond Rings And Other Bling

Earlier today I mentioned that while I am not motivated by food, many other things get me just as jazzed. Music is obvious, and jewelry is another big one. Why spend $300 on dinner when you can get yourself a bauble from Baccarat? (I actually own that piece, among others.)

It was a joy and a privilege to be able to put together a collection of amazing engagement rings for SheFinds. It's nice that we live in a time when there are so many options, from platinum to rose gold to colored stones.

Things That I Find: Black Diamonds

Maybe it's the time of year, but every time I open some sort of e-mail blast or go on to Pinterest, someone is pushing the black diamonds.

It's almost October, so maybe people are in a dark stone kind of mood. Either way, I'm obsessed as well.

This ring from Gemvara came across my radar yesterday. While I wouldn't replace a regular diamond with a black one for, say, an engagement ring, I do love the way that they look.

Like any lady, I love jewelry. Maybe moreso than the average woman. Pinterest is great for shiny eye candy. This one is quite a piece.

Beware Of The Doghouse

Last Christmas J.C. Penney had a genius marketing campaign called "Beware of the Doghouse" which was a video about men sent to a kind of purgatory for buying their wives and girlfriends bad Christmas gifts. The key to get out was to buy them jewelry. The have a sequel this year, which is just as funny.

Maybe it's because I was raised right, but I was always under the impression that jewelry was the only gift option for women during the holidays. I remember often going with my dad to pick out something in amethyst for La Madre, (she was born in February) and one year going to Tiffany's for an anniversary band.

That said, if you're a guy and you've never bought your woman jewelry, what on earth have you been thinking? If you're shopping for me and need ideas, may I suggest a bauble from Baccarat?
