One of the best take aways from this is how she talks about that doing anything is all about the process, not the destination. Important to remember when you are working on any creative endeavor, be it a book or an animation or design. You'll get to the end, sure, but the meat and potatoes is along the way.

This big news since Friday is that Valentino released a sketch of the dress he desgined for Anne Hathaway's wedding. You can read more about it here.

Last night the documentary about Valentino that came out in 2008 popped up in my Netflix. It follows Valentino and his partner, Giancarlo, during the year that Valentino planned his 45th anniversary celebration. Valentino comes across as a lovable genius, with five English bulldogs running amok. Definitely a life worth emulating.


Since I'm a big fan of understanding what you are buying -- and not blindly draping oneself in labels -- I found other documentaries about different designers. Definitely a good way to spend Sunday Funday

Addictive Bridal Site: WeddingDressCreator.com

Yesterday while researching some story ideas I came across a website called Wedding Dress Creator. It's a tool that lets you design your own wedding dress. It is the most addictive app I've come across in a long time. Even if you're not planning a wedding, playing around with necklines and skirts is a lot of more fun than you realize. (Okay, if you're a woman.)

How Wedding Dresses Are Marked Up

This is a great video about the mark ups on wedding dresses. I am slightly flumoxxed, however, by this young woman's shock at how much fabric and labor cost in China. She paid $2700 for a wedding dress -- which is a deal in most circles -- and yet she feels ripped off because the dress only cost roughly $700 to make. It's almost as if she missed the memo that we live in a capitalistic society. Everything has a mark up. You either make the dress yourself or get the best deal you can. No one is going to sell it at cost.

Wedding Dress Sale At Filene's!!

At lunch today I wandered into Filene's to buy some running pants and I was greeted by a sea of wedding dresses. Apparently it was Filene's annual wedding dress sale, and the pickings were bizarre.

For starters, most of the dresses were inexpensive, about $250 or so. That's reason enough to run around the middle of the store in your knickers, as most women were doing. Right next to the men's department, I might add. The problem with the dresses at Filene's, though, is that some of them seemed a little dirty and tattered. Some were missing buttons and clasps. Others were strange colors, like blue.

I'm fascinated by the process of choosing a wedding dress. I've had friends who paid a pretty penny to have them custom made while others got them from Mom and Pop shops in Connecticut. Still others stumbled upon them at sample sales. One friend bought hers at age 24 for $70 in a thrift shop, but didn't get to use it until she was 28. It was gorgeous.

Oddly, no one ever seems to fit into their mothers' dresses from the 1970s. My mom bought her wedding dress, a cotton eyelet number, for $30 at A&S in Chicago in 1973.

It takes a certain kind of gal to get married in yellow. Not everyone looks good in it. The young woman who was buying this one was a blonde.

I really hope this is a bridesmaid's dress. Some things are faux pas, even in modern weddings.
