When Flip Flops Flop

I'm always amused that the universal symbol for summer is a flip flop. When one lives in New York City, the last thing you should wear are flip flops. As much as Guiliani and Bloomberg have cleaned up Manhattan, lifestyle and culture wise, it is still a filthy town. With eight million people milling around, how could it not be? Eons ago, it didn't take long for me as a newbie to realize that wearing flip flops around town would do nothing but turn my feet black.

I have no love for the flip flop. They create an unflattering silhouette. No one's legs look longer or prettier in them. Apart from being a lifeguard there is no professional situation where they are appropriate and you are forcing people to look at your feet. And let's face it, no one has nice feet.

As much as I love summer, I don't love flip flops and I am constantly on the hunt for shoes that are easy to slip on and off. These are a good start. Small, delicate and not a lot of actual shoe. If you wear them your feet won't look like you just walked through a coal mine.

The Hierarchy Of Summer Cat Calling

Now that summer is upon us, women will invariably be wearing less clothing. That means that we will be cat called more than usual.

At least five times today assorted Latino men said, "God bless you, mami," as I walked by in my sun dress. I thought it was a sweet way to cat call, as opposed to the coarse, construction-worker whistles and "Hey Baby!"

What are your thoughts? How do you like to be shouted at by strange men?

No! Not the North Fork!

Jon on the Mattituck Beach

I have loved the North fork of the Hamptons, and more specifically, Mattituck, since my friend Jon took me out to his family's country house back in 2002. I love the North Fork so much it is the location of the La Pauline Dirty 30 Birthday Weekend in June. Invites will arrives in select mailboxes shortly.

You can imagine my horror, then, when I saw the travel piece in New York magazine about how kid-friendly the North Fork is. While that is true, I always liked to think that the Noth Fork was one of the few semi-pure beachfront areas that have amazing wineries and where you can ride a bike on rural roads and not fear getting hit by a car. Bah.

And now...I have a summer of Upper East Side yuppies to look forward to, who think they are getting off the beaten path from Bridgehampton.

Thanks New York.

And goodbye, old friend...
