Every iPhone I've ever owned has become a little time capsule, because I never bother to transfer data. Instead I start fresh when I get a new one. Today on The Huffington Post, I explore why these little digital boxes are important.

New York City, Pre-Bloomberg
Now that Mayor Bloomberg is on his way out, a lot has been written about his legacy, focusing mainly on how he made New York City a cleaner, safer place to live.
Like clockwork, there are now lots of photo galleries popping up of pre-Bloomberg (and pre-Guiliani) New York City. It's the New York that was covered in graffiti and somewhat unsafe. And still very beautiful. I'm a late-90s arrival, so many of these photos are way before my time. But I still remember when the Lower East Side was considered edgy and the far West 40s were the last place you wanted to be late at night.
Click on any of the photos below to see the entire collection. Vintage Everyday is a wonderful source of old photographs, of New York City and elsewhere.

Big Apple Air
Clips from In Living Color are now on Hulu, which is fantastic news for 90s-era pop culture fans like myself.
Below is a sketch that I'd never seen before called, "Big Applre Air." Now that the subways are running again it seemed topical. This is from roughly 1992, and I'm amazed/impressed at how little subway stereotypes have changed. The homeless, the bored look in everyone's eyes and the guy who tries to slip in as the doors are closing.
Also: note the Twin Towers in the establishing shot.

...And Now For Some 90s Nostalgia
Not sure if you're aware, but MTV is bringing back House of Style on October 9th.
They made a documentary about the show that aired on their style blog back in early August, and it's very well done. Look for vintage footage of Jon Stewart and Anna Wintour, among others.
My favorite part is the segement they do about mixing high fashion with low, which is not only my approach every day, but also my philosophy for life. Never trust anyone in blatant, head to toe labels, kids.

Classic Fourth of July Photos!

Under normal circumstances I would have pics to share a few days after the Fourth Of July of the parties and BBQs that I went to. This year, there are slightly different circumstances and I was not able to go to any.
Keeping up with the spirit of nostalgia that's been all over this blog lately, I went into the archives and dug up some fave shots from Fourths of July past.
But not to worry! At the end of the month I'm headed to two weddings, and wedding photos are what started this blog in the first place. Def stay tuned!
In 2005 I ping ponged around the tri-state area on Fourth of July weekend. I went to Connecticut and then to Mattituck and then came back to Connecticut. I would like to know how, on a journalist's salary, I managed to pay for all those bus and train tickets.
My friend Jon on the beach in Mattituck. I took this shot with a disposable camera.

Same sunset, different angle. Still a disposable camera.

At Jon's house in Mattituck. Why do I pose like this?

Pensive at 2:00 a.m. at Jen's place in Fairfield.

Watching fireworks on my roof on 20th Street. I don't know why I had so many black and white photos in 2005.

2006. Completely sober at fireworks in Old Greenwich. I took my five-year-old cousin to them.

Coolest little cousin evs.

A few days later at a family party in Connecticut. That's La Madre and my two brothers and I.

My brother Rob and I. Growing up, everyone thought we were twins. We're actually 18 months apart.

Why do I have no shots from 2007?
Impromptu jazz at a backyard BBQ in Brooklyn in 2008.

Jen et moi.
