Digging The Second Avenue Subway

This video ran last week on CBS Sunday morning, but it's a very well done piece about the progress of the Second Avenue Subway. As someone who has almost always lived off of Second Avenue in my 14 years in Manhattan, the Second Avenue Subway has been a bit of an urban legend. Would it ever really happen? Now that it is underway, it's still only three stops long.

But it's needed. I've done two tours of duty living on the Upper East Side, and the subways in the morning are reason enough for me to pause before ever moving back. Even if the subway only goes three stops, and through the most residential sections, maybe it will be an improvement.

Get Your Bling On

We all like shiny things, and this segment about Harry Winston as jeweler to the stars has some serious pieces in it.

The CBS Sunday Morning Profile Of Nate Silver: All The More Fantastic Today

I missed CBS Sunday Morning this weekend (the horror!) and so I missed the profile that they aired about Nate Silver.

Given that Obama won last night, and that Silver's statistical models were pretty much on the money, the segment is even more amazing to watch now.

Note Joe Scarborough's boneheaded remarks at 2:15. Also: the 80s-era footage of CBS pollsters. They certainly know their target demographic.

Math guys are totally having a moment.

Maybe Absence Does Makes The Heart Grow Fonder...

As far as I'm concerned, anything that CBS Sunday Morning puts on is genius.

Case in point: this morning's interview with Raoul Felder, the celebrity divorce attorney here in New York City. He's been in marital law for almost 50 years and towards the end of the video talks about what makes marriages fail.

His two cents? Too much togetherness is what kills marriages. People need to do their own thing, have their own interests and not be held back by their spouse. Not bad advice at all.

The Algorithms Of Love

CBS Sunday Morning is one of my favorite shows. Below is a great segment that they did about the science of love, and all the algorithms assorted online dating sites use. I love the idea of mathematicians sitting around and trying to find a formula for it.

Of course, if the math is too complicated for you, you could always get out of the house, maybe to a party, and introduce yourself to new people. :-)

You Call That A Hurricane?

Now that Hurricane Irene turned out to be the biggest non-event of the summer -- as least in Manhattan -- check out this video of real hurricanes that have hit New York City.

This clip combines two of my favorite things: Ben Stein and CBS Sunday morning.

Best line, "We are not immune to arithmetic."

Ben Stein for president!
