Snow Day In New York City

We had a little bit of snow over here in Manhattan. The beauty of New York is that while the rest of the country belly aches about shoveling snow and slick roads, New Yorkers just get out and about. Midtown was hopping this afternoon when I went for a walk.

Times Square. It was still crowded.

It's a snowy day in New York City and I just discovered this animation by Dan Meth. As usual, it's great.

Look At The Tree! Christmas Eve, Etc. 2010

TR had the genius idea today to check out the tree in Rockefeller Center. I've lived in New York City for eleven and a half years and have always done my best to avoid it -- especially when I worked in Rock Center.

We started at Bryant Park at the ice rink. No skating, just loafing around. Or, in Andre's case, running around and talking to strangers.

Papa Bear and his cub.

Tons of skaters!

Here we are! The tree!

TR did not love the crowds. Tourist attractions are painful for him.
Rock Center was much more painful for Tom than for me

Ahoy hoy!

OK, just one more.

The building at 4 Saint Mark's was one a single family home until it was converted to a theater and then apartments. This is one of the old plaques on the front door to the apartment.

I put this up every year because it's a classic.

Me: I just did some sit ups.

TR: It's crazy enough in this apartment. I don't need you doing all that Gene Simmons stuff.

Me: Gene Simmons?

TR: I mean Sue Simmons

A Room Without A View: The Windowless Gramercy Apartment -- $2200!

PC153468

Yesterday while out with a client I came across this gem -- a large one bedroom apartment in a Gramercy building with laundry and elevator that is completely windowless. This dungeon can be yours for only $2200 a month! (I'm 90% sure that windowless apartments are illegal.)

Even better: the super (who is a dead ringer for Schneider from One Day At A Time) told me today that the only reason it's vacant is because the people who rented it before were using it as an illegal casino. The door is even dented up where the cops had to bust in. (Schneider seemed really proud of that fact.)

It actually could be a good deal if someone needs cheap office space. It's right off Third Avenue in prime Gramercy. Schneider, by the way, mentioned he would really like it if the next tenant was a massage parlor.

Let's do the apartment 360:

The whole place is easily 600 square feet.

Pretty decent kitchen. Full sized appliances!

Bedroom is large -- but still windowless. Would make a great Champagne Room.

According to Twitter, these people have feeds similar to mine. This implies that I am a cross between a brilliant economist, a personal finance guru, a wine connoisseur and a Southern Belle. Not bad. Or inaccurate.

Unsupervised This Sunday!

TR and the boy are going on a field trip to the Dirty Jerz on Sunday. How should I spend my unsupervised time? Seeing Black Swan and getting my nails done are already on the list.

The Public Has Spoken ! They Know Who's In Charge.

Today I received two Christmas cards -- from two entities who don't know each other -- both addressed to Pauline And Family.

We practically had to wrestle Alicia down to get this photo

Vintage Sesame Street Video

Anyone who watched Sesame Street in the early 1980s will remember these trippy counting cartoons. A few popped up on Hulu this morning. Since they were all drawn by hand, old school animation style, if you look closely at them you can see the pencil and brush strokes.

I miss the era when Sesame Street took its musical inspiration from Herbie Hancock's Watermelon Man.

Enjoy!
