BBQ, Al Roker and a 1992 Boyfriend
The weekend was a good one, between Debbie's BBQ in NJ and seeing Mission Impossible. I have photos of the BBQ, to be uploaded later.
On Saturday, before Doug and I headed out to NJ for Debbie and Glen's party, we stopped in a store on the Greenwich Avenue called Richard's. It sells nice clothing and the like and on Saturday it was packed.
Doug was getting fitted for a suit so I sat in a chair and stared off into space while drinking some of the free coffee. Nearby, kids stared glassy-eyed into a TV set up by staff to, most likely, keep the kids quiet while their parents shopped. Like I said, it's a really nice store, so the fewer the distractions, the better.
As I made lists of the many things I have to do, I noticed the sales girls on the second floor were looking down onto the main floor. Initally I thought they were looking at me. Did I look like a shoplifter? Was my skirt too short? Then I looked straight ahead (thank goodness for the new contacts) and saw Al Roker being measured and fitted for suits and a tux. He was much shorter than I expected him to be but thinner clearly very friendly. He kept talking to one of the little girls sitting next to me at the TV. I think her name was Layla.
I sat and thought how cool it was to see Al Roker getting fitted for a suit in this random store in Greenwich. I went back to my list, because I didn't want to look like a stalker. I looked up again and saw a sales guy in a suit in front of me. There was something weirdly familiar about him, and so I watched him for a bit. Then I realized it was Mike, my first boyfriend from 1992. He used to drive a silver Nissan Sentra and I thought he was cool because he was on the hockey team at one of the nearby high schools. I don't know if he recognized me, although as much as I hate to admit it, I pretty much look the same. Same big hair, same sometimes-vacant stare.
I decided not to go over and say hello, since it's been almost 15 years and I wasn't sure what the protocol was with high school-era boyfriends. Is there one?
Photos from Den and Glen's BBQ later on.
