I'm Secretly An Old Man
If people didn't know better, they would think I was an 80-year-old man based on some of the posts on this blog. Between the jazz tickets and the love of CBS Sunday morning, you'd think I was like every other octogenarian in Murray Hill, spending my Sunday afternoons at Walgreen's stocking up Metamucil and paper towels.
That said, there is a Cab Calloway special on PBS starting tomorrow, February 27th. Below is a sample of one of the segments.
These are two of my favorite Cab Calloway numbers. Upbeat, "Fifteen Minute Intermission."
Ballad, "That Old Black Magic."

Speak Up!
This is a great segment on the Today show about why women don't speak up in work settings. Turns out, it could be biological.

Happy Birthday, La Madre!
She has sworn me to secrecy about her age, but suffice it to say she is twice as old as me.

She's been in this country since 1965, and the way the story is told, came here with eight dollars in her pocket -- and on a boat! Now she has three kids, three grand children and an urequited crush on Alex Trebek. Not bad for a gal born in Belarus.

Andre In A Box!
Over the years I've posted photos of Mozart In A Box as well as Peppe in a Box.
Today, we have Andre in a Box. (And not wearing pants!)

Altruism: We Have It!
The very good news is that after just a week of fundraising, I met my goal and raised over $1500 for The MS Society!
I am still accepting donations. If you're feeling inclined, feel free to donate. $2500 is another big fundraising milestone.
It seemed timely that this segment ran on CBS Sunday Morning, about a young boy who, thanks to the internet, raised enough donations to get his grandmother's house out of foreclosure.

This Is The Book To Read
My never ending love of chick lit brought this book to me: Bond Girl by Erin Duffy. It's chick lit set on a trading floor and it's one of the best bits of chick lit I've read in a while.
It's a pretty smart book, which leads me to wonder: is the genre of chick lit evolving past stories of flustered magazine assistants?

We Are Jazzy New Yorkers

The thing about living in New York City is that it's really easy to not take advantage of all the cool things to do. Luckily, the Columbia Alumni Arts League sends constant reminders -- and deals -- on tickets. (You should totally join if you're an alum!)
Last night Erin C. and I saw Winton Marsalis lead a Stan Kenton Centennial at Lincoln Center. We had mezzanine box seats -- and I would argue the best ones in the house.
Beforehand, Erin and I checked out Foreclosed: Rehousing the American Dream, because one of our friends had a part in the creation of one of the exhibits. You should def check it out. The MoMa is free on Friday nights!
Thumbs up for live jazz

Partner in crime, Erin C.

We could practically touch the performers. Shortly after I took this photo the ushers made me put the camera away. They were not pleased.

Up in our box, we were a bit like these two.

The Algorithms Of Love
CBS Sunday Morning is one of my favorite shows. Below is a great segment that they did about the science of love, and all the algorithms assorted online dating sites use. I love the idea of mathematicians sitting around and trying to find a formula for it.
Of course, if the math is too complicated for you, you could always get out of the house, maybe to a party, and introduce yourself to new people. :-)

Please Help Me Raise Money For The MS Society!

The Multiple Sclerosis Society gave me one of the last three nummers that they had for the New York Half Marathon on March 18, 2012. So let's raise some money for the cause while I run 13 miles!
Please click here to make a donation. I need to raise $1500 in 37 days. Even $1 is perfectly fine. :-)

A Few From The Weekend

Every year, just as the winter doldrums seem to set in, Erin has a birthday that makes everyone put on their party pants. You may remember the year we all went to Benihana, or even the strange, Jenga-inspired evening in 2006.
This year's frigid festivities were at El Cantinero, the restaurant Sex And The City made famous in the episide about Carrie's 35th birthday.
Since we were such a large group, they put us on the porch, which had no heat. That didn't stop us from enjoying the margs.

The cast of thousands that came out for the evening. And the check totally worked out!

With the birthday gal.

My Mexicali outfit. The skirt is H&M circa 2002.

Jen et moi. Have you bought her books yet?

Ole, indeed.

Many furry creatures died to make this coat -- and I approve.

Yet another nail salon opened in Murray Hill, with probably the best name ever.

On Sunday, I ran a four mile race in Central Park in 37:38. Nothing like near-freezing temperatures to push you along. That's Carey, on the left. She finished in 33 minutes, because she is a speed demon. (And a fellow Norwalker!)

Sh*t Girls Say About Money
I'm a big fan of all things LearnVest, and I love this Sh*t Girls Say About Monday video.
I especially love the bit about the girls trying to pay a restaurant bill with a million different debit cards. Chicks never bring cash with them to restaurants, and I've never understood why. There is an ATM on literally every corner of New York City.
Also, trying to make the bill fair? Just split it equally among everyone. Who cares who had a Diet Coke versus who had a Chardonnay? You're their for the company and conversation, not to needle over the check.

When Subway Entertainers Collide

Overheard on the subway today:
Conductor: (In heavy Long Island accent) We've got The Temptations at the back of the train and the Amigos in a mariachi band in the front. They're going to meet somewhere in the middle. And then -- I don't know what's going to happen.
Conductor: (10 seconds later) Oh. The Amigos just got off at 8th Street. Crisis averted.

Missed Connections Valentine's Party
It's Feberuary 1st, which means that my annual fascination with Valentine's Day begins. I've always liked the holiday -- I think it's cute -- and today I found this ad for a Missed Connections party sponsored by the New York Transit Museum.
If you don't have a Valentine, maybe you should check it out.
