Andre's First Haircut Ever

While out in Pennsylvania, Tom got Andre his first haircut ever. (I'm kind of proud that I waited a year and half before cutting his hair.)

Curls, glorious curls. Hasta la vista!
CurleyNaturally curley

Andre's haircut. He looks exactly like Tom now.

Val's out there as well, getting into the liquor.

I may be unsupervised this weekend, but I can assure you I won't be doing this.

I hope Steve Duncan doesn't end up like that guy in Alaska with the bears.

Giant Snowman On 33rd Street and Third Avenue

Leave it to my beloved Caliente Cab to put all that snow to a creative use. Everyone was taking photos with it.

Things That Apparently Still Exist In New York City: Uncoverted Loft Space

True story: My friend Jen decided, at the age of 36, to start a band. She found a space in DUMBO, Brooklyn and invited all of her nearest and dearest out to watch her sing 90s covers. It was genius.

On Saturday night about 40 of us headed out to Plymouth Street in DUMBO, the one block in the area where it still seems feasible that you could be randomly stabbed. We ended up in an unconverted loft in which a couple lives and throws parties in their apartment. (There was even a free roaming cat!) There was no heat in the hallways and a BB gun shooting range was down the hall. I heard at least one refernce to Burning Man. The quote of the evening was when some guy came up to me and said, "I love the annulet you're wearing. It's very Neverending Story.

The building totally isn't zoned for residential purposes, and for that we were all in awe. Pioneers! They still exist.

Many of us New York City old timers hadn't seen space like it since, easily, 2000. I remember, in 2001, seeing something similar on Canal and Broadway, but it's likely since been converted into a condo. Or an HSBC.

Photos are below.

Absinthe, anyone?

Jen = Susannah Hoff's doppleganger. Have I mentioned that she's written a book?

Jen's drummer is an adorable, sweet pea. And yes, that is a toy drum set that she rocked all night.
P1203471

Jen's male fans are straight out of the Clinton era.

I don't know why these two just don't get together already.

Erin C. et moi! It was tough dressing for the evening, given that it was 10 degrees outside and I was going to a party in a warehouse on the riverfront.

Inside the loft. Look at those windows!
P1203445

I can't even imagine what this must look like in the daytime.
P1203490

How many people do you know that have a full stage in their living room? And a trapeze hanging from the ceiling?
P1203484

It was an artist's loft, indeed.
P1203459

OK. Now the good stuff. The freezing cold halls! This where things get raw.
P1203512

Actual debris in the halls.
P1203514

There were a few bikes in the hall. None were locked up. Honor code, kids.
P1203513

Despite their tough exterior, these doors did nothing to keep the cold out.
P1203517

In case we got bored of Jen's vocal stylings.
P1203522

Sadly, I left my gat at home.
P1203525

None at all? Then why are we in Brooklyn?

Found In Fairfield! Millard Street!

So I had to get a photo with it.

someecards.com - Be on the short list to be my Valentine

It's the end of January, which means that Valentine's Day is just around the corner. Valentine's Day may be my favorite holiday, mostly because everything is red.

Red, you see, is my color. I have two older brothers, and we are all roughly a year and a half apart. Early on my mother decided to color code the three of us in order to tell our things apart: Andre was blue, Robert was green and I was red. If there was a red cup, it was mine. If there was a blue book bag, it was Andrew's. To this day I don't really like things in blue or green, mostly because I associate the colors with my brothers.

Which is why I like Valentine's Day. On a subconscious level, the day appeals to me, because it's a day of red. I've never been one to mope on Valentine's Day or think it's a fake holiday. I think the sentiment of the day is quite nice: tell people you love them! Send them cards!

So if I start posting a lot of Valentine's-related things, now you know why.

I realize I haven't been the best blogger in 2011. Business chugs along, although the inventory in January is slim at best. Today a client and I were down in Tribeca, looking at two beds in the $5,000 to $6,000 range -- and they were all crap. Most were just over 1,000 square feet. Small bedrooms. Dregs all around.

Andre fell asleep on the early side tonight, so I've been sitting around listening to Billy Idol and taking photos of myself with my iPhone. The Fab Life, indeed.

Totally trying too hardIMG_0974

How about some of that Billy Idol?

Every woman should watch this -- especially if you have a kid or would like one some day.

TED Conference talks = awesome.

..yet another photo of TR and Andre sleeping. Sometimes people see these and they ask if all those two do is sleep.

It's not just that they nap together. They do everything together. If given the choice between myself and TR, Andre goes to TR. They're two peas in a pod. I was merely the vessel.

The Quotable TR: Housing Edition

Me: I found a building on 54th Street and Second Avenue that has a children's playroom.

TR: I've never heard of a building that has one of those.

Me: They're pretty common. The building also had a pool.

TR: It sounds like you want to live at the Holiday Inn.
