Erin C., a regular on this blog for years and a certified partner in crime, has been highlighted by The New York Times as a rising star of gossip blogs thanks to her work at Crushable.com. YAY ERIN!
A few weeks ago I wrote a piece for her site. Note: This piece involves Me! In College! With A Guy! Naked! So if you're my dad you may not want to read it. It's rated R due to brief adult nudity.
I'm feeling a little nerdy today, so I'm going to post some of my favorite classical selections. If you feel a little smarter after listening to these, you're welcome.
First off, if you're looking to expand your classical repertoire and don't want to buy some cheesy Best of Classical CD (which will, invariably, include Canon in D. Blergh.) pick up the soundtrack to Master And Commander. Apart from being an amazing movie whose genius was never appreciated, it has great classical music that works well together. It's especially good for long car trips.
I like this ditty, too.
There are many recordings of Carmina Burnana, but as someone who performed it at Carnegie Hall I can say with some authority that this is the best one out there. The vocals and instruments are perfectly balanced, which isn't the case with others.
Forget O, Fortuna. There are better pieces within Carmina. Below is my faovrite. I have a flair for the dramatic
And for a trite selection of the day, here is Antonin Dvorák - Slavonic Dance No. 4

I got a last minute phone call in the middle of the afternoon to show this place, so since I was already out and about, I agreed to meet the client. While I waited for him to arrive, I took this shot of the boy and I. Andre, who had never been in it before, liked the way his voice echoed off the 20-foot ceilings. I also earned bonus points for carrying Andre and his stroller up a flight up stairs to the parlor floor.
Larger issue: why is this apartment even still available? No one wants to live in a full floor of a brownstone? Really? 1300 square feet, two working fireplaces and a patio isn't enough space?
I spent the afternoon in Williamsburg yesterday, which was Andre's first trip to Brooklyn and the first time I braved the subway with a stroller. There are very few elevators in the subways system, so traveling with a Bugaboo is a two person job. I was happy to see, however, how many randoms guys offered to help carry it up staircases, before they realized that I had an accomplice.
This was my favorite photo of the day. It's outside the Automotive High SChool in Williamsburg. It was built in 1937, hence the art deco lettering. Oh, and the ideal that Manhood is a virtue above all others. And that girls wouldn't be in an automotive school. The school guard on duty yesterday, a woman at that, told me that everyone takes a shot of this.
I'm fascinated by the old warehouses in Williamsburg. Many of them have been or are still being converted to condos, but I love signs like this.
She is now partnering with InStyle Magazine and AK Anne Klein for a series of fashion events so it was a good day to reveal the gal behind the curtain.
If you are a lady in finance, law, etc. and don't already read her blog, you must!
Gary V. is a man after my own heart with his bit about 2005 St. Emilions today. Video below highlights two great ones and one dud. (?!?!)
I also love that he gives a shout out to Chateau Puy Blanquet. I have sent their bottles to clients and I think they've got great 2005s. If I can get my hands on one I also often bring them to parties, if only so that I can sit in a corner and drink it myself.
I'm trying to find the perfect one bedroom for a client who is relocating to New York City. She's a Connecticut gal like myself, so I'm willing to go the extra mile and preview tons of stuff for her. Also, we got downright abused in the rain yesterday but we managed to still have fun.
This afternoon was a quiet one. Methinks Manhattanites are recovering from being cooped up yesterday, so I checked out a few one beds in the East 50s whose price points were a little too low to drag a client to if I hadn't first seen it. No one wants to see a dump!
Below is one of the best one bedroom deals I've seen in a while. There are two real $1700 one bedrooms in the same building on East 50th Street between First and Second Avenue. It's a quiet block, lined with brownstones and near all the fun bars and restaurants. There's a real kitchen, exposed brick, deco fireplace and great closets. The super is a very nice guy as well. He and I had a little chat this afternoon.
To give you an idea of the size, the unit on the ground floor was converted to two bedrooms and was still cozy and livable. But it's def great space for one person.

A few steps back
Welcome home!
Bedroom easily fits a queen sized bed. Has large windows and closet.
This sign was seen in the building of TR's grandmother down in Florida. A glimpse into my octogenarian future, perhaps?
A few weeks ago this place went on the market and I thought it was futile to even take photos of it, since a four bedroom with a giant roof deck off of Madison Square Park couldn't possibly stick around. For some reason, my guess is that winter is notoriously slow, it is still around. Full set here.
So here are some pics. $8300, true four bedroom duplex with huge living area plus a roofdeck that spans the length of the building. Private elevator, pet friendly. Working fireplace.
I just finished teaching yet another a six week Intro To Non-Fiction class with the Gotham Writers Workshop and I'm getting in some course evaluations. They are stroking my ego. The new session starts April 19th, so if you feel like stalking me, you can do so for $320. But you must turn in the weekly writing assignments.
Says one former student: "Pauline is one of the most entertaining individuals I've ever encountered. She created a safe and enjoyable learning environment for someone who was very nervous to try writing out. I thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and good content!"
Most writers are better on paper than they are in real life (trust me on that one) so this batch of reviews is proof that I'm not socially retarded.
